Free PDF driver, WinPDF 1.0

By Karl De Abrew on 29 September, 2008 | , No Comment

Yet another entrant to the free-pdf-driver marketplace, PDFDesk have released a freeware product, WinPDF which provides a PDF writer called “Easy PDF Creator”. As is normally the case, you convert to PDF by “printing” your document to the virtual printer driver from any app which supports printing — i.e. most of them.

Some nice features are included such as hyperlink detection, usage control, and metadata support.

As is usually the case with a free PDF creation product vendor, PDFDesk also offer a more fully featured commercial product called Easy PDF Creator (perhaps a little confusing as the virtual printer driver installed by WinPDF also shares the same name).

Easy PDF Creator has been in the marketplace since 2004 and is available at $139 for a single user license. First appaisal is that this is a little overpriced as there are many products closer to the $49 – $99 category that provide at least the same functionality, if not more (editing, viewing, etc…)

In the simple tests I performed, I did find WinPDF was very quick — as advertised. That said, I was unimpressed to see the line stamped at the bottom of each page which stated, “Easy PDF Creator is professional software to create PDF. If you wish to remove this line, buy it now.”

All in all, it’s worth checking out WinPDF though, you can’t beat the price…
