Tips on using metadata effectively in OS X

I’m a big fan of using metadata to organize files because it means I don’t have to use an inefficient hierarchical folder tree. Unfortunately for some of us, this idea seems to be gaining more traction on the Mac OS X platform, than it is on the Windows platform.
