ZAMZAR – Free Online File Conversion
Interested in free online file conversion – Zamzar may be the answer for you. This online file service has the ability to convert from a variety of document, image, music, and video formats.
How does it work? Well, like most of the online conversion services, you provide either the file or a URL to the file. Select your options. Enter your email address, click submit and hey presto! The file is uploaded to the Zamzar server, run through their conversion engine and a link to the converted file is sent back to you via email.
You can convert from PDF to:
doc - Microsoft Word Document
html - Hypertext Markup Language
odt - OpenDocument Text Document
pcx - Paintbrush Bitmap Image
png - Portable Network Graphic
ps - Postscript document
rtf - Rich Text Format
txt - Text document
And to PDF from:
csv - Comma Separated Values
doc - Microsoft Word Document
docx - Microsoft Word 2007 Document
odp - OpenDocument presentation
ods - OpenDocument spreadsheet
odt - OpenDocument Text Document
ppt - Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation
pptx - Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 Presentation
pub - Microsoft Publisher
wpd - Wordperfect Document
wps - Microsoft Works Document
xls - Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
xlsx - Microsoft Excel 2007 Spreadsheet
Notable exceptions: you cannot do PostScript to PDF, or (surprisingly) Rich Text to PDF – however, the latest Office2007 formats are supported.
While the service itself is free, you can sign-up for a commercial account which ranges in price from $7 USD per month to $49. The more you pay, the faster the conversion, and the more files you can convert at the same time. As it happens, I waited over 30 minutes for my conversion, so I’m guessing you wouldn’t want to use the free subscription when time was short.
I suppose you don’t get something for nothing… or at least not very quickly.
p.s. A quick inspection of the file revealed that e-pdfconverter was used to perform the conversion.
