Websense Security Labs has received several reports identifying a new Zeus bot (Zbot) trojan spreading through PDF attachments to emails. Zbot is a privacy hacking trojan which collects confidential data from each of the infected computers. This is the most recent exploitation of PDFs.

Adobe announced that it will enable a new regular background service on 13th April to silently distribute and apply PDF updates to the worldwide installation of Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. The new ‘silent’ service is aimed to keep the copies of its software fully-patched for more number of users.

A security expert created a Proof of Concept (PoC) in which he executed an embedded executable in a test PDF file without exploiting any security vulnerabilities in PDF software. This clever mechanism could allow hackers to execute attacks through embedding rogue executables in a simple PDF files.

Sounds Broken Inc. announced a new version 1.1.0 of gogoDocs, its reader for Google Docs on iPhone. The new version of gogoDocs now supports ‘upload any file’ feature, including PDF, audio and video files.

Corel Corporation announced Corel WordPerfect Office X5, a new version of its alternative to Microsoft Office. It provides enhanced capabilities which includes the creating, reading, organising, annotating and sharing of PDF documents.

VISIARC and The Symbian Foundation launched the Mobile Documents, a subscription-based streaming application for Symbian OS-based mobile devices. The application will allow users to access large attachments such as images and PDFs through email streaming.

Monkeybread Software announced Combine PDFs 5.0, an updated version of its PDF merge/split software. The new version includes the support for Quartz filters which allows the users to add effects to the content while writing a PDF document.

ABBYY Europe launched its ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 CLI for Linux, a command line interface utility for integration of ABBYY’s Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and PDF conversion technologies within Linux environments. The new utility will enable fast access to the automated text recognition and conversion process on Linux environments.

H&W Computer Systems, Inc. released its new JES2Web software to receive JES2 reports from Mainframe system in a PDF or Text format. The software also provides the capabilities to automatically e-mail the reports, manage and reuse the reports on a PC.

Nuance Communications, Inc. announced that the accounting department of Boston Red Sox has selected Nuance’s eCopy PaperWorks software for scanning paper documents in to PDF. Boston Red Sox intends to drive out the paper from its accounting department to create efficient invoice processing.

Foxit Corporation has released a new version of PDF Reader 3.2 with number of improvements to PDF viewing process and new features. The navigation has been improved in newer version and shortcuts have been added for ease-of-use.
