WindJack releases PDF CanOpener 4.0

WindJack Solutions, Inc., a developer of plug-ins for Adobe products, released PDF CanOpener 4.0, its plug-in for Adobe Acrobat for in-depth analysis and manipulation of PDF documents. The version 4.0 supports Acrobat 8.0 or later and runs on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

PDF CanOpener 4.0

PDF CanOpener 4.0 is for creative users and developers to identify, locate and manipulate data in PDF documents. It provides visual display and tools to analyse internal PDF structures and to navigate through the PDF structure (font type, color spaces, page location, etc.). The developers can then edit, copy & paste and print the PDF structural information through PDF CanOpener 4.0.

The new version 4.0 is compatibile with Acrobat 8.0 or later. It includes a new installer and a security mechanism which assists users to migrate to newer Operating systems and 64-bit platforms. PDF CanOpener 4.0 also features improved navigation, ability to highlight field annotation types and ability to provide instant information through pop-up windows.

Hot off the press! (sorry) PDF Polisher-Pro has a new workflow solution aimed at getting the best quality output from a printing device. This is done by way of applying Screen’s scanning technology to improve magnification, sharpness and tonal characteristics.

When processing PDF documents, they can be previewed and individual image corrections may be specified for each separate RGB image. This is done in Adobe Acrobat using an additional Adobe Acrobat plugin.

Acrobat for Legal Professionals has published a video from an Acrobat plug-in developer which demonstrates how to use a plug-in called AutoInk and Acrobat to write directly on top of PDF documents.

Tablet PCs are growing in popularity in the legal community. Using one of these specialized laptops, you can write directly on the screen.

To use the Tablet PC with Acrobat, you’ll need the $69 AutoInk Plug-in from Evermap.

AutoInk installs a toolbar into Acrobat that allows you to write directly on top of PDF documents.

Rosebud acquires a patent*

Rosebud PLM has moved to the next level with its WYSIWYG collaboration tool, Rosebud, based around Adobe PDF.

They announce that:

…”our unique method of collaboration on the Web — ‘Method and Software for enabling N-way collaboration work over the network for computers’ is officially designated as ‘patent pending’.”

and that….

Rosebud enables full lifecycle document review and supports both concurrent and independent collaboration in single platform independent software solution.

I have not had a chance to spend a great deal of time working with Rosebud myself — other than the original demo I saw quite a few years ago. Needless to say, much work has been done, so for those who are evaluating a variety of other web-conferencing tools, it’s definitely worth a look.

Let’s hear it for ClearScan!

Duff Johnson, head honcho at Document Solutions Inc., has been working with scanning to PDF intelligently for almost as long as computers had keyboards (in place of punched cards). I’ve had endless discussions with him over the years about the multi-resolution technique he developed to perform intelligent scanning, OCR’ing and downsampling — based on analysis of the contents of the page — to produce the smallest file possible, with the maximum reusability.

Well, finally, it appears that with the release of Acrobat 9 he’ll stand a chance of being run out of business as this is included at-no-cost titled as “ClearScan”.

Duff believes that ClearScan is one of the best new features of Acrobat 9, and that it has the …

“highest-quality image-to-document conversion available today.”

So why would Duff be so thrilled about this — well, it’s because Document Solutions, Inc., played a significant role in developing ClearScan for inclusion in Acrobat 9. Don’t take my word for it, head on over to Duff’s blog piece at AcrobatUser.coms. While you’re at it, you should probably sign up to Duff’s blog as he’s got plenty to say on technologies relating to scanning, OCR’ing and archival of PDF documents [especially Section 508] — top reading if that’s an area that you work in regularly.

I’ve had the inside tip that a new website, pdfscripting.com, a site focused on scripting Acrobat and PDF — with a healthy dose of JavaScript is on the boil. Using a subscription model, you’ll have the opportunity to access a swagger of videos, script examples, automation tools, and cut-and-paste libraries.

It’s owned and operated by WindJack solutions– who’ve been knee-deep in Acrobat & PDF since version 5.

I’ve taken a look through the beta site and I’m quite impressed — you can sign up to get the word when it’s publicly released. Ah, copy and paste, it saves so much time than writing it yourself.

Swiftwriter plug-in for Adobe Acrobat/Reader updated

Omtool have released an update to their free Swiftwriter plug-in for Adobe Acrobat/Reader — a one-click solution that integrates PDF documents with popular document management systems.

Improvements in the new version include:

Allows users to not only save PDF documents from Acrobat or Adobe Reader directly into a configured DMS system (fully profiled), but to also allow users to open PDF documents from those same DMS systems, namely Interwoven WorkSite, Microsoft SharePoint, Open Text eDOCS (previously Hummingbird DM), and WORLDOX solutions.
Check-in and check-out capabilities are now inherent in this new plug-in version. When opening and saving PDF documents from within a configured DMS, Swiftwriter Plug-In for Adobe invokes the native DMS check-in/profile screen and allows the Acrobat or Adobe Reader user to enter profile information and save the document.
