WindJack Solutions released PDF CanOpener 4.0, its plug-in for Adobe Acrobat for in-depth analysis and manipulation of PDF documents. The version 4.0 supports Acrobat 8.0 or later and runs on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Late last year, I tried installing Adobe Acrobat 9 on the PC where I use Windows 7. I thought it was a good combination as I didn’t experience any troubles with the basic functionalities such viewing, printing, extracting and bookmarking PDFs. It turned out that a lot of others were not as lucky as I was.

Adobe has decided to postpone a fix for the latest vulnerability discovered in Adobe Reader and Acrobat until 29th June. Adobe had warned on this latest vulnerability on Friday, 4th June 2010 which could lead attackers to exploit the Flash Player and Adobe Reader.

Adobe announced that it will enable a new regular background service on 13th April to silently distribute and apply PDF updates to the worldwide installation of Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. The new ‘silent’ service is aimed to keep the copies of its software fully-patched for more number of users.

Adobe has released emergency security updates for Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat to address the critical vulnerability which has been identified in Reader 9.3 for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, Acrobat 9.3 for Windows and Macintosh, and Reader 8.2 and Acrobat 8.2 for Windows and Macintosh. Adobe has recommended its users to update their current version of software to 9.3.1 and for the users who cannot update to 9.3.1

NiXPS say yes in their latest blog post. But it’s not the concept of PDF Portfolio’s that troubles them per se, but rather the fact that in certain bleeding-edge PDFs, Adobe include a warning message that tells you to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader if you want to view the PDF in question. No ifs, buts or maybes — if you want to view this PDF, then you’ll need to use Adobe’s software.
