Kobo, a global eReading service, announced that Kobo E-Reader, its competitive e-reader App, now supports EPUB and PDF files on iPhone and iPad. This announcement would bring Kobo E-Reader in competition with Amazon’s Kindle software which only supports proprietary files.

Kobo has been a long-time promoter of open standards, and its products and services support the standard EPUB format. The new Kobo E-Reader now supports the eBooks in EPUB or PDF content bought from other services providers or sources such as Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, etc.

The EPUB and PDF files supported by Kobo E-Reader must be unencrypted. Kobo E-Reader supports the Apple devices running at iOS 3.2 or higher.

Foxit Corporation, a leading provider of PDF solutions, announced that it will license its industry-leading PDF and ePub technology to key players in eBook market while it will cease the development of its own eSlick Reader. This move will enable the eBook Providers to enhance digital rights management, content management and distribution on their electronic devices.

Foxit’s core strengths in PDF and ePub technology are invaluable to the eBook market as its solution has the ability to convert documents and images to PDF, ePub or eReader PDB files which can run on any eBook device.

Foxit has decided to discontinue the eSlick Reader, its own electronic reading device, in order to eliminate the possibility of competing with its eBook partners. It will also enable Foxit to focus on platform-independent PDF technology and multi-device support to leading eBook providers.

Foxit Corporation is also well-known for Foxit Reader, its easy-to-use and free PDF viewing software.

For those using a Mac – you’re in luck, an anonymous blogger on www.MacOSXHints.com has shared a very quick method to enable easy integration between PDF-capable apps on iPhone, iPod and iPad devices.

The idea is to add any PDF-capable app to the PDF Services menu which then allows users to transfer the print preview of a document to another app as a PDF document.

The blogger shared this idea in context of integration between iTunes, a digital media player application and iBook 1.1, an app for viewing PDF files. The integration allows users to add PDF documents or web pages to iTunes from the iBook PDF viewer.

The method is simple to create an alias of iTunes (e.g. alias named as ‘Save PDF to iTunes) and include it in ~/Library/PDF Services on the Mac. Once this is done, next time a user is viewing a PDF document or a web page on their iBook and would like to add this document to iTunes for later reading — the user simply clicks ‘Print’ and selects ‘Save PDF to iTunes’. This launches iTunes and saves the PDF document.

Foxit Corporation, a provider of eDocument technology for desktop, mobile and on demand platforms, today announced the release of firmware 2.0.1 build 0205 for its eReader device, eSlick.

The latest fimware from Foxit comes with optimized features for improving the overall user experience. The eSlick users can restrain the number of bookmarks up to 50 pages to simplify the bookmark and speed up finding the target bookmarks. Now, it’s also easier for users to distinguish the real bookmark feature from the ebook contents with use of “table of contents” which replaced the original description “bookmark”. A cache has also been added in Fit width and Fit height mode for making them fast and save time.

When an empty folder is opened, tools like cropping, copy and so forth are grayed and cannot be used. This makes it easy for users to distinguish which tools are available and which tools are not, providing a clear and obvious look.

Better Reading Experience

The ePub format reading speed is improved and the settings for invisible font content prevents the fonts to be carelessly modified improving the overall reading experience. The reading is further enhanced by the ability to widen the margin in both sides of the text and in PDF reflow.

eSlick customers can find the latest release free of cost at www.foxitsoftware.com/ebook/

enTourage Systems introduced the world’s first dualbook with the functionalities of an e-reader, notepad, netbook, audio/video recorder and player, all in one. The device made its official debut at 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week and gives you the ability to read e-books (ePub and PDF), take notes, surf the internet, send emails and messages, listen to music or watch movies any time.

eDGe is a dual-screen, Wi-Fi enabled device that combines an e-paper screen with an LCD one for better interaction. The e-reader screen on the left side is 1200 x 825 pixels, or 9.7 inches measured diagonally and reads both ePub files and PDFs. The bigger size offers better reading with features of zooming, glare-free screen and ability to read in sunlight. The color touchscreen is 1024 x 600 pixels, or 10.1 inches and offers easy Web surfing, playing movies or MP3s, sending emails and much more. It uses the Google Android operating system which means you can also add applications you want.

The company is building its own e-book store having access to over 200,000 trade books and over one million free public domain books digitized by Google.

CEO and president of enTourage Systems, Asghar Mostafa said “The enTourage eDGe is an industry-changing product, breathing new life into content by making e-books more digitally enhanced and interactive, while also offering capabilities of other leading devices in a single platform.”
