Late last year, I tried installing Adobe Acrobat 9 on the PC where I use Windows 7. I thought it was a good combination as I didn’t experience any troubles with the basic functionalities such viewing, printing, extracting and bookmarking PDFs. It turned out that a lot of others were not as lucky as I was.

I compiled the most common responses I received when I posted my experience in installing Adobe Acrobat 9 on a Windows 7 platform. Out of the comments I received, many reported that they had a good start with Adobe Acrobat 9 but with the installation only.

After installing Adobe Acrobat 9, the other users experienced a number of problematic situations within Acrobat itself such as closing instantly, not being able to print, freezing when scanning and so on.

Note: now, obviously the comments have been made by those who have encountered problems more likely than not, however, they are interesting nonetheless. Take some time and read through these Acrobat 9.0 and Windows 7 comments yourself…

Windows 7 is actually still in its test run phase for many users but it surely promises a lot as it is considered as the worthy successor of Windows XP. It is just depressing that Adobe may not be keeping up with all the functionality problems that users experience when combining it with Windows 7. A good support system or a dependable resource of information both for Windows 7 and Adobe Acrobat users should really be in place for everyone who may still want to make this combination works.

For any comments or reactions, feel free to post. If you want to post questions, try asking your questions at our PDF Question/Answer site at 4x PDF Help site.

Sean Sullivan, a security advisor for Finnish anti-virus vendor F-Secure, recently said that Microsoft should include a basic PDF viewer in Windows to help protect users from PDF attacks.

Sean took an example of Apple which provides Preview, its PDF viewer, included in Apple Mac OS for users to view and read PDFs. A basic built-in PDF reader will meet usual user needs for opening, and reading PDFs while avoiding any exploitation of advanced PDF functions such as JavaScript and support for Launching embedded content. Recently, there has been a huge rise in PDF attacks where the security has been compromised through malicious embedded content.

MS Office cannot open PDFs without the help of third-party software or add-ons. Also, the preview feature in Windows 7 and Windows Vista won’t display PDFs. However, Microsoft has promoted a substitute for PDF through an XPS viewer bundled with Windows 7 but this had little success.

Sean argued this case in late April through his post on F-Secure security blog which can be read at http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001943.html.

The news appeared at http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9176223/Windows_needs_a_built_in_PDF_viewer_argues_researcher in early May.

Nuance Communications, Inc., a provider of imaging solutions, announced that Feeding America, the America’s largest hunger-relief organisation, has selected Nuance PDF Converter Professional 6 as part of its desktop upgrade project. The deployment of this software will enable an efficient document workflow and collaboration within the organisation.

Feeding America is embarking on its Project Athena which is an organisation-wide initiative to upgrade the office technology including deployment of Windows 7 and MS SharePoint. Nuance PDF Converter Professional software will be integrated with MS Office, MS SharePoint and email.

Feeding America uses PDF to reduce costs on printing, fax and postal by distributing PDF documents via email instead of using paper. Also, the various food banks across the country do not require any source software to view the PDFs. Nuance PDF Converter will assist in converting the static electronic forms into fillable PDF forms which could be completed, saved and emailed by food banks.

How loudly have you screamed that (along with a few other things!) when you decided to leave it until the last minute to complete your IRS tax forms.

1. Can’t seem to get it from the web?

If you’re downloading from the web, turn off the display PDF in browser feature within Adobe Reader. Aside from being very slow, and often giving you the impression that something is amiss — you’ll find in Windows 7, (right now) you’ll have no luck at all.

2. Is it … PDF groun… PDF groundhog day?

Try clearing your browser’s cache — or even downloading the file on another computer — if you want to be sure. An errant duplicate file hiding away in your system can stop you getting the latest copy. Your PC will continue to serve up the half-baked one that was causing you problems in the first place.

3. Ooops, I guess I shouldn’t have gone with the cheap one…

Contact the person who has provided you with the file — maybe they slipped up in the PDF conversion process. Not all PDF converters are created equal — perhaps ask them to try another. You’ll find a whole lot of free creators out there – we’ve compiled a comprehensive list that we regularly update.

4. Say there, anyone seen my PDF file?

Check the file size — if it’s close to nothing (i.e. 1-2 kb), then chances are — you never got the whole thing in the first place. It was somehow lost on along the way… see if you can’t find it somewhere else.

5. Hmm, are you really a PDF file, or just glad to see me?

Take a look at the filename — maybe when it ran through your virus scanner or email security system, it had an extra few characters added on the end. If you want your PDF to open, it definitely has to have .PDF on the end. Try as hard as you like — you just won’t be able to open Britney’s latest .mp3 in Adobe Reader.

6. I don’t think anyone is going to mind me having a quick look.

Sometimes you’ll find that PDFs have been locked down with standard password security (the type that is built into Adobe Reader). For those — you need to write nicely back to the person who gave you the file and ask for the password …

7. This PDF will self-destruct in 10 minutes!

You’ll also find some forms of security that’d sit nicely on the set of Mission Impossible. That’s right, they literally become a useless pile of bytes after a given number of days (or hours!). Unless your name is Tom Cruise, you’d probably best giving those a miss.

Well for now — good luck to you, if you’ve got any other problems (with answers please!) post a comment and we’ll add them to the list…

UPDATE 13 March 2010: Looking to get answers to any more Windows 7, PDF and Adobe Reader issues? We’re getting a lot of discussion of Windows 7 versus Acrobat 9 at our 4x Help question and answer site on this issue.

I’ve just loaded up the latest release candidate of Windows 7 Ultimate (version 6, build 7100) — it was an upgrade on the previous (semi-dead-like-a-slug) 32-bit Vista installation. I’ve got 4GB of RAM, however, on the first 3GB will be usable until I load up my 64-bit version.

In starting my test with Adobe Reader, I downloaded the latest Adobe Reader (9.1 at the time, and 42mb download) for Windows Vista. I had already installed the app on Windows Vista, so this was a repair install — I had no problem with this completing, although, admittedly, as I mentioned, this was a repair not fresh.

That said, in our previous article Rowan said that he was able to do this from-scratch on a fresh Windows 7 machine.

…. here goes … nope … when viewing a PDF on a website – (I selected the IRS Publication 590 [fascinating reading!]) with Chrome (1.0.154.59, my browser stays blank or pops up an error, and with IE (8.0.7100.0), it tries to download to the desktop.

Still no problems using Foxit Reader.

Side note: Although it took a colossal amount of time to install, I was mighty pleased that with Windows 7 I was able to ressurect my Vista installation without having to do a total recovery. Let’s just say using my “only-option-wipe-the-disk” ASUS laptop disk, not only wipes the disk, but the next few days from my life as well.

What about you? Any change? No luck? Or perhaps some problems?
