ABBYY Europe launched its ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.0 CLI for Linux, a command line interface utility for integration of ABBYY’s Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and PDF conversion technologies within Linux environments. The new utility will enable fast access to the automated text recognition and conversion process on Linux environments.

Linux hasn’t received much attention from the PDF world over the years and it’s not hard to understand why. First, Linux relies on open source developers (i.e. people doing stuff for free) and PDF creators, editors and viewers don’t appear to be on the priority list.
